Van Doorne's digital library

In the past year, Van Doorne law firm has been working on digitisation of its complete library. As more and more professional literature is becoming available online, the aim was to also provide employees easier access to the books. In close collaboration with publishers, the project was completed successfully. Van Doorne's employees can now access the digital library consisting of more than 11,000 books from any desk.

The existing library made digital

Van Doorne had already been using the BIBIS Library Management System for many years. This is why Square was contacted at an early stage to provide input on the technical aspects of the solution. A solution that ensures that all books can be accessed online as well as searched and printed (in part or in full) and that also makes it possible to copy and pasted selected text sections. Furthermore, books are placed back in the digital library if the system detects that it has not been actively used for a certain amount of time to allow other users to access it.

One of Van Doorne's key requirements was the possibility to check simultaneous use of the digitised books. Books cannot be downloaded, but can be accessed by a single user or by multiple users simultaneously, depending on the agreements made with the publishers.

Based on Van Doorne's request, Square developed the XPOSI Digital Library: a combination of an online book reader and a hosting platform from which the e-books are streamed to the reader efficiently and safely. The XPOSI Viewer is linked to the BIBIS Knowledge Portal, the OPC of Van Doorne's library.

Link to existing systems

In addition to digitisation of the books, Van Doorne decided that it should also be possible to find and access all online information sources via the BIBIS Knowledge Portal. To this end, the links to the information sources have been integrated into the catalogue, thus enabling employees to access all the available sources (such as books, online databases and magazines), from one central location.

Using Square's EASY Linker solution, the manual login process required to access certain resources has been automated. The automatic login scripts are hosted by Square and monitored and maintained on a daily basis, which means that Van Doorne doesn't have to worry about this process.

The library catalogue can also be searched using the Rechtsorde legal content integration system. This provides an additional way to easily access the books and other sources.

‘Van Doorne's digital library improves the efficiency of all employees significantly. In addition to online sources, our lawyers, notaries and tax specialists can now also access the books any time of the day to provide optimal service to our clients.’ - Peter Piepers, Knowledge, Innovation, Information and Training Manager at Van Doorne.
